The future of conventions.
Nov. 23rd, 2008 06:17 pmEconomy wreaks havoc on conventions.
It's sad, but I can understand this situation completely. Especially if you're trying to hold a specific fandom con. I've seen quite a few cons going toes-up over the last couple of years. It seems the only ones surviving at all are the more generic SF&F cons that have been around for a lot of years like NorWesCon , WesterCon or WorldCon.
I first found the world of 'live' science fiction at a con back in the 60's. I met other people who had the same interests and didn't talk down to me because I was 'just a kid'. I met the writers and artists who made the magic come to life. A lot of my fond memories center around cons and some of the art on my walls reflects that magic.
It will totally suck if future fans never get that chance.
[FWIW: This is one of the beautiful pieces I was able to buy at the art auction at RustyCon last year. 'Losing Memories'. Winning this one became very important to me. I had finally made the commitment to do some pretty hard work aimed at getting a handle on the whole PTSD/depression issue that's plagued me for a very long time. To say that this one piece summed up so much of what my life had been up to that point is an understatement. There are time losing one's memories can be a good thing or a bad. Right then it was both.
