A few weeks ago now I got home from Chicago to find my neighborhood ablaze.

It was a three story apartment building and it covered all of west philadelphia in a black smoke that smelled like burning televisions. All the people got out but, standing there, watching it burn, and then all night sitting at home, smelling it burn, I couldn't do anything but think about pets trapped in apartments.

Rescuers, including City Kitties did everything the could -- they staked out the building, the enlisted the aid of firefighters, they set traps. Ultimately they recovered seven living cats from the ruins and two that had died. Inexplicably, two people never turned up to claim their cats -- after surving a fire that lasted two days, and thousands of gallons of water being poured through the windows in sub freezing weather, they got left, alone in the snow with nobody looking for them.

They're currently in foster care, but looking for a person.

Do you recognize this young lady?

What can you do?

You can Click here to donate to the victims (human) of the fire.

You can click here to donate to City Kitties general fund which goes to help stray cats all over west philly.

Most Importantly, if you're in the area, you can foster a cat or kitten. This is what City Kitties needs the most. They're at capacity and need people to volunteer their houses. City Kitties will pay for food, litter, and vet bills all you need to supply is the love. This is a great way to perpetually have a kitten in your house. Seriously. Kittens. All the time. It's also a great way to give love to an older cat who's been abandoned or who has lived on the street and never had a person.

If you have pets in your house and you're worried about what would happen in a fire keep enough carriers for all your pets by the door of your house and pre-arrange with friends or family where you could go in the event of an emergency. Also, you can get free window decals from the aspca here these will alert firefighters to look for pets in your house.

If that's not enough to motivate you -- this is a letter City Kitties got from Evan, who saved up his entire allowance for another year and donated it to help stray cats. Every single penny he owns. In honor of Evan I'm going to match his donation. It's tax deductible.

Foster a cat (or dog) if you can, donate if you can't but want to help, spread the word if you're able, open your door for something that's cold and friendless. Be a force for good. Thanks everybody.

[livejournal.com profile] haikujaguar is a truly wonderful writer and artist but is currently going through a rough spell. Her house has a serious mold issue and she and her family are staying over at her parents until they can deal with their house. Needless to say, this isn't a cheap fix and they can't go back until things are taken care of: it's not healthy for either of them and certainly not for their little girl. Please go *here* and see if there's anything that catches you eye to pick up. Every little bit will help.

Even if you can't do anything right now, please boost the signal.

Boosting the signal here. I'm going to take a look and see what I can do, but in the meantime let's pass the word.

I posted about [info]perclexed's situation last night under flock, but she's given me permission to make a public post.

She has suffered an extraordinary period of bad luck over the past several months. On December 22nd 2009, [info]perclexed lost her home and most of her possessions in a house fire. She was homeless over Christmas. Thankfully the Red Cross were able to find her a hotel, but it didn't lessen the devastation of the event. After several stressful weeks and days, she managed to find an affordable apartment, only for her job to end six weeks later. She thought she'd be able to go back to it; this did not happen.

She's been unemployed ever since. She has a meeting with her former employer scheduled for tomorrow (Friday), but she half-expects him to cancel. Apparently he's prone to it. While he dithers, she exists in a state of financial crisis; her rent is due and her bank account is overdrawn and about to be closed, her bills are going unpaid. And, oh yeah, she has to eat, too.

I've watched her sell and sell and sell what few possessions she has left in order to buy herself more time. She's a knitter; she's sold her equipment, what wasn't ruined in the fire, and she still has things for sale here, if you'd care to take a look.

Make no mistake, this appeal is not a solution to her problems. This is about buying [info]perclexed some time, another month to be exact, and fandom taking care of its own. [info]perclexed is a long-time fangirl; I've known her since the early days of Smallville. She's helped other fangirls when they needed it; I trusted her with my money during that school library appeal a few years back and I had no cause to regret it. She's a wonderful woman, she's terrifically strong, but everybody has their limit.

The Mission:

1. The immediate target is $550 to cover her rent; anything over that is gravy. It would would be fantastic if we could get her overdraft fees paid off, too.

2. It will take $2000 to buy her that extra month of relative peace.

I think the usual way to do this is to set up some kind of auction or arrange all the money raised to go forward as one big gift, but we don't have time. If you can give anything at all, please send it direct to [info]perclexed via PayPal:

perclexed at gmail dot com

Please consider leaving a comment here if you do drop anything in her direction. It would be good to keep track of the target. You know the math; if 50 people give $10, we're almost there. This is a very achievable primary mission objective! Check back here for an idea of where we're at; I'll do my best to keep you updated.

But if you can't donate, that's okay! Hugs are acceptable. We all know how important a kind word can be in our times of crisis. Also! Advice about how to survive a string of piss-poor luck like this would be gratefully received. If you have professional knowledge to share, or personal experience, please do so, here or direct to [info]perclexed if you so wish.

And if you can't donate, and you don't feel comfortable offering hugs, and you have no advice to give - please, please boost the signal!

Total here so far: $55

I said in a comment below, I feel bad about asking people to declare, but it's money, you know? I was a bit concerned about transparency. Or ... something. If you want to give privately, please do! Money, hugs, or advice. All is welcome. :)

ETA2: YOU GUYS ROCK. I just spoke with [info]perclexed and she tells me we have almost achieved the immediate objective. That is so seriously awesome. GO FANDOM GO.

And she's sending me to bed now, too, (because I are UK-er and I are now using exclamation marks too many and babbling) so I'll catch up with you in a few hours.

YAY!!! xx

ETA3: $95 listed here.

And now I'm going to bed. Crap, I don't wanna. But I am!
