Tired, but content
Nov. 22nd, 2009 01:28 amYesterday evening I baked off a 9 pound ham, cut it up and freezer packed about 5 separate packages: two with bones and meet chunks and three with big pieces for carving later. That left one medium sized piece for the fridge. This evening I baked a 13 pound fresh turkey and did same: bag of bones, fat pieces, skin and meat bits for stock later and two big bags of deboned meat, both white and dark.
No, I'm not expecting a sudden influx of diners for the holidays. It's still just me and the cats. Various relatives have their own plans and I don't mind that. I'll probably go help out somewhere or see if Pet Haven needs an extra hand on their closed day.
What happened is I made the mistake of wandering through Wal-Mart a couple of days ago and meat was going for "Real Cheap" [tm]. I got the ham for about $7 something and the fresh turkey for $10. *And* they were running a special on frozen turkeys: $5.99 each [about 12 pound birds] with a limit of 2 so I grabbed them for the freezer, So for about $20 bucks and two evenings of work I've got ready-to-go meat for various things - crock pot beans and ham, turkey soups and such. Not counting two big trays of boneless chicken thighs I baked off a week or so ago - again for the freezer.
The cats and I will be doing good for the next few months. I really love my small chest freezer.
And now - to wait and see if the weather guessers are right about the snow due this evening. So far they've missed, but we'll see.
