Boise Winter Parade
Nov. 27th, 2010 01:22 pmToday is the annual Boise Holiday Parade kicking off the holiday season in Idaho's capitol. This year's theme is 'Christmas Around the World'. There's a light snow falling and the temps have come up to 32F, but there's still a layer of ice on the street. There's are all the things you expect to see in parades like this: horses units, Shriners, funny little cars - not always full of Shriners, motorcycles groups, drill teams, etc. But some of the local specific things:
The Ada County paramedics, rigs with light's flashing, pushing gurneys and doing a dance routine to 'Stayin' Aline'. I'm laying bets one of them will need a gurney before the end of the parade due to ice slippage.
A female mounted horse flag unit. The flags being carried are dedicated to Sp4 Bowe Bergdahl, a local soldier from Hailey, Idaho who's been in the hands of the Taliban since his capture over a year ago. His mom is one of the riders. The folks who live in Hailey go out on a regular basis and refresh all the yellow ribbons that are tied on just about everything in their town.
The Salvation Army, pushing shopping carts down the parade way, and people coming out to them putting boxes of toys into their carts. They had to swap out the carts at least twice that I could see on TV because they were filled up. Seriously cool!
The Treasure Valley Roller Girls - thank God they're *not* wearing their skates. It doesn't seem to be making much difference as they are sliding around in their boots having fun.
The 'Stinker Gas and Quik-Shop' folks have a pick-up truck with a big costumed skunk on the back. Probably the warmest guy there.
The local big feed and supply companies [ZamZows, D&B Farm Supply, etc] with pretty much anything from a big delivery truck down to a go-cart.
I have no doubt there are quite a few of you going "So?" I find it fascinating that the big winter parade in a state capitol city makes a loop around 7 downtown city blocks, one of them being the capitol building itself. And all in less than an hour start to finish.
Tonight is the tree lighting in Boise. Caldwell already did theirs last week and the whole downtown is ablaze with color. It's the sort of display worth just parking somewhere and walking around in the dark. And yes, it's safe enough for a single female to wander around in the dark.
There are some things about this location that are good for me. The safe feeling is one of them. I don't shut off my 'situational awareness', but I've found I can dial it down and not twitch at everything.
It's nice.
